The Waterfront, Shell Cove is one of Australia’s premier lifestyle and boating destinations, just south of Sydney near Wollongong
The world-class Shellharbour Marina features boardwalks to shops, a dining precinct, hotel, state-of-the-art community facilities, residential land, houses and apartments.
SOILCO supplied the soil and mulch products to Landform Gardens and Coastwide Civil for The Waterfront’s spectacular landscape design that includes a variety of plantings for different gardens and bio-retention basins designed to treat stormwater runoff.

For over 30 years, Coastwide Civil has been managing and constructing civil projects including subdivisions, roads, highways and water management projects with values up to $200 million.
Coastwide Civil Project Manager Craig Dunn said the company has been at The Waterfront, Shell Cove since day one undertaking excavation of the harbour and completing remediation of the surrounding land prior to development.
“We constructed the break walls out to the ocean and all the residential subdivisions around the harbour including the infrastructure services for storm water and roads. Pretty much everything you see there!”
“It used to be the Dunmore Swamp before the harbour was built so there was a lot of soil remediation work to do before the project started.”
After the bulk earth works were completed, Coastwide Civil enlisted SOILCO’s expertise for the wetland basins and landscaping, as the estate got closer to opening.
“We involved SOILCO because they are local and we knew they would assist our engineers as part of their core work, so it was easy to use someone who knew what they were doing.”
“SOILCO provided input into the design of the soil health products to meet stringent specifications because the council and the certifier made sure we put the proper fit for purpose materials in. They did a lot of testing and modification of the product to make sure the specifications were achieved, so we had good confidence they would get that over the line for us.”
“Some of the materials they had to blend specifically for the project,” Craig said.

The Landform Gardens team has years of experience working alongside architects, developers and town planners to deliver quality outcomes on complex and environmentally challenging landscapes. They worked with The Waterfront developers, Frasers Property, on landscaping for the various stages of development including the foreshore, wetlands and residential areas.
SOILCO supplied the landscaping materials including Landscape Mix, Turf Special, Bio-retention Media and Pine Mulch.
Landform Gardens Operations Project Manager Kelly Moffitt has been working with SOILCO for many years with commercial landscapers in the region.
“They’ve got a good reputation, their products are good, they go above and beyond with their testing, and are reasonable on price,” Kelly said.
“Landform Gardens has used SOILCO before and I always like trying to use local suppliers for the convenience and reliability.”
The development features many sustainable initiatives.
Some of Australia’s leading environmental consultants were engaged by Frasers Property Australia and Shellharbour City Council to ensure The Waterfront was designed to live in harmony with the natural surroundings. Sustainable initiatives included remediation of a former Council tip on the site, construction of a compensatory wetland and treatment of acid sulphate soils.
The project’s water quality management plan included rehabilitation of 1.5 kilometres of existing watercourses and construction of a series of wetlands and bio infiltration swales to cleanse stormwater to the highest standards.
